Nina gave me an appraising look. “I can either use a shaving charm or a hair-loss spell. But that would cause all your hair to fall out. Eyebrows, eyelashes, the lot.”

Our neighbour was a hairdresser, so she had the expertise on my situation. Tall and curvy with long hair, Nina lived in the flat above ours and gave us free haircuts whenever she got bored. I sat on the sofa and tried not to scratch too much, though my new hair itched like crazy.

“No thanks.” I shuddered. “I’d rather keep the moustache.”

“You do look very dashing.” Alissa stifled a grin.

I scowled. “I can’t go into work with my hands like this. How am I supposed to use a computer? Or the telephone?”

“You went into work while transparent once, didn’t you?” said Alissa. “Just explain to your colleagues and it’ll be fine. Then it’ll be the weekend.”

I lifted my furred hands. “And what if it can’t be fixed?”

“All spells can be fixed,” said Alissa. “It’s not a curse, at any rate.”

“I’m not so sure it was a spell either,” I said. “Are there potions for rapid hair growth?”

“Possibly,” said Nina. “Did you annoy anyone recently?”

“No,” I replied. “I mean, I did annoy some werewolves, but they thought I was making fun when I showed up on their territory like this.”

“I can’t believe you went there.” Alissa rose from the armchair, her wand out. “Even when Bryan and I were together, he never took me to meet his family in the forest. We always met at the New Moon pub.”

“I doubt either of us is welcome there now.” I tried to scratch my face, but a thick coating of hair got in the way. “Thanks to a certain vampire. Why can’t you date normal guys?”

At least her boyfriend wasn’t giving her the silent treatment, a voice in the back of my head said. Don’t start, Blair. Nathan’s under a lot of pressure, and he’s promised to do better. The fact that he hadn’t laughed at my furry hands and face was proof enough he was a keeper.

“Miaow,” said Sky.

“Sounds like he agrees with me.”

Alissa prodded me in the spine with her wand. “Samuel said he’s very sorry the werewolves trashed their own pub. He’d have apologised directly to them, but he has himself a lifetime ban from the New Moon. Which is a literal lifetime, to a vampire.”

I snorted. “Has he told you how old he is yet?”

Alissa suddenly became very interested in examining my furred hands. “Mm.”

“That wasn’t an answer,” I said. “He’s hardly as old as Vincent, right?”

“Nobody’s as old as Vincent,” said Nina. “Except maybe the wandwood trees.”

She wasn’t wrong. The elder vampire was the town’s oldest resident at over eight hundred years of age. Samuel wasn’t that old, but there was still an age gap between him and Alissa that she’d avoided discussing in depth.

Alissa drew in a breath. “He’s young for a vampire.”

“Younger than Edward Cullen?”

Nina choked on a laugh. “Please at least say he hasn’t been celibate the whole time.
